In a notable development in Delhi’s municipal politics, Raja Iqbal Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was elected the new Mayor of Delhi, marking a continuation of the party’s influence in the city’s civic administration. Singh’s unopposed ascent to the position comes in the wake of political friction and an opposition boycott, casting a spotlight on the shifting balance of power in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The BJP, which has historically maintained a stronghold over Delhi’s municipal bodies, further cemented its dominance as Raja Iqbal Singh won the mayoral election without any major resistance. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the primary political opponent, chose to boycott the election, alleging procedural irregularities and political manipulation by the BJP.
With the opposition benches largely empty, BJP councillors and allies cast their votes in full strength, easily crossing the required majority. Singh secured over 130 votes, with no votes cast against him. This win strengthens the BJP’s presence in Delhi’s civic infrastructure and gives them leverage in policy implementation at the local level.
Who is Raja Iqbal Singh?
Raja Iqbal Singh is no stranger to municipal politics. A veteran in the civic arena, he previously served as the Mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation before the unification of the three municipal bodies. Known for his measured demeanor and administrative experience, Singh has built a reputation as a hands-on leader focused on issues like cleanliness, urban development, and citizen services.
Coming from a modest background, Singh has risen through the ranks of the BJP’s local cadre, having spent decades working at the grassroots level. His supporters view his election as a result of dedication and political loyalty, while critics see it as a strategic move by the BJP to reinforce control ahead of the next Assembly elections.
A Boycotted Election: AAP’s Strategic Silence
The AAP’s decision to boycott the election has sparked widespread discussion. Senior AAP leaders claimed the electoral environment was “unfair and undemocratic,” alleging that BJP-backed presiding officers manipulated rules and procedures in previous MCD sessions.
Although the AAP won the majority in the last MCD elections, internal conflicts, disqualifications, and legal tussles have since altered the equation. By skipping the vote, AAP hoped to underline what it claims is a “murder of democracy.” However, this allowed the BJP to walk away with the top post uncontested.
Political analysts are divided on AAP’s move — some argue it handed BJP a free win, while others believe it was a calculated protest meant to draw public attention and mount pressure on central authorities.
Key Challenges Facing the New Mayor
As the new Mayor of Delhi, Raja Iqbal Singh faces a daunting task. From garbage collection woes to strained finances and overburdened public health services, Delhi’s civic problems are immense.
Among the Mayor’s stated priorities are:
- Waste management reforms through better segregation and processing facilities.
- Improving cleanliness rankings under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
- Addressing parking issues and urban traffic congestion.
- Enhancing public health infrastructure, especially post-COVID.
- Streamlining property tax collections to boost MCD’s finances.
Singh emphasized in his inaugural address that his leadership would focus on “inclusive and responsive governance,” and that he seeks “cooperation from all political parties to serve the people of Delhi.”
However, with AAP boycotting the vote and Congress largely absent from municipal affairs, Singh’s promise of cross-party unity will be tested.
