Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17, where he will advocate for inclusive economic growth, climate justice, and global digital equity. The invitation extended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney highlights India’s critical role in shaping the global agenda and its emergence as a key partner in addressing cross-border challenges.

The Group of Seven (G7)—an alliance of the world’s most advanced economies including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the United States—meets annually to discuss shared economic, geopolitical, and environmental issues. Although India is not a member of the bloc, its repeated invitations in recent years signal its growing relevance on the world stage.

This year’s summit takes place against the backdrop of persistent economic disparities, energy market disruptions, intensifying climate-related disasters, and rising global digital divides. Modi’s attendance at the summit is expected to bring the concerns of the Global South into sharper focus while promoting India’s vision for a fairer, more cooperative world order.

“India welcomes the opportunity to engage with the G7 on issues that affect not just advanced economies, but all nations,” the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. “We aim to contribute constructively to global solutions that prioritize people, planet, and shared prosperity.”

Prime Minister Modi is expected to participate in several thematic sessions over the course of the three-day summit. These include discussions on artificial intelligence and governance, sustainable economic recovery, food and health security, energy cooperation, and financial reforms. India’s digital development model, which has prioritized inclusion and access, will be among the key topics Modi is expected to raise.

India’s groundbreaking initiatives such as the Aadhaar biometric ID system, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and CoWIN vaccine platform have positioned the country as a global leader in digital public infrastructure. Modi is likely to propose broader international collaboration on these scalable models—especially to benefit developing nations.

India is also expected to take a firm stand on climate equity. Despite contributing only a fraction to historical global emissions, India has set ambitious goals, including reaching net-zero emissions by 2070, expanding renewable energy capacity, and launching the National Green Hydrogen Mission. At the summit, Modi will urge wealthier nations to fulfill their climate finance commitments and enable technology transfer for sustainable development.

Speaking ahead of the summit, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar emphasized that India’s approach would be “rooted in partnership, equity, and shared responsibility.” He added that the Prime Minister would highlight the needs of countries facing acute climate vulnerability, particularly in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.

Beyond formal sessions, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with leaders of several G7 countries. These meetings are expected to focus on defense cooperation, trade facilitation, joint technology ventures, and Indo-Pacific regional security. Among the most anticipated engagements are Modi’s discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

This summit also offers an opportunity for India and Canada to improve relations after a turbulent diplomatic phase in late 2024. While no official statements have been made regarding a bilateral meeting, experts suggest that Modi’s visit could mark a turning point in India-Canada ties, especially on economic and environmental collaboration.

The summit’s venue—Kananaskis, nestled deep within the Canadian Rockies—was chosen for its secluded and secure environment, conducive to open and strategic conversation. Canadian officials have mobilized extensive security resources, including aerial surveillance and perimeter lockdowns, to ensure the safety of all delegates.

Observers say that Modi’s presence at the G7 will provide a much-needed bridge between the interests of industrialized nations and those of the developing world. “India brings both scale and solutions,” said Dr. Priya Menon, an international affairs scholar. “Its democratic framework, technological innovation, and climate action make it a natural partner for the G7.”

India’s participation also reflects a larger trend toward more inclusive global governance. Following its successful presidency of the G20 in 2023—where it positioned the Global South at the heart of global policy discussions—India is increasingly seen as a consensus-builder with credibility across geopolitical divides.

Economically, India continues to be one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world. With a youthful population, rising middle class, and strong innovation ecosystem, the country is attracting increasing interest from G7 members looking for trade and investment partners. Modi is expected to highlight India’s potential as a trusted supply chain partner and a destination for ethical, sustainable business practices.

At the same time, Modi will use the G7 platform to promote multilateral reforms. India has consistently advocated for the expansion of key international bodies like the United Nations Security Council, the World Bank, and the IMF to reflect current geopolitical realities rather than Cold War-era structures. Calls for reform are expected to intensify at this year’s summit.

Ultimately, Modi’s participation is both symbolic and strategic. It underscores India’s readiness to share global responsibility while advocating for those who often remain unheard in elite policymaking circles. Whether it’s in discussions on climate finance, AI governance, or trade justice, India’s message will be clear: cooperation must be broad-based, equitable, and grounded in mutual respect.

As global leaders gather in Canada’s mountain retreat to map out the future, Prime Minister Modi’s voice will echo not only as that of India’s elected leader, but also as a powerful advocate for a more inclusive, sustainable, and human-centered global order.
