A celebration meant to unite cricket fans in joy ended in tragedy as a stampede outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and injured over 50 during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) IPL victory parade on June 4, 2025. The catastrophic incident has led to swift political and administrative actions, with the Karnataka government suspending senior police officials and arresting key event organizers.

Despite prior notifications about the expected crowd size, the police presence was reportedly inadequate, and security arrangements fell short. The closure of nearby metro stations exacerbated the crowding, funneling supporters into limited access points.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and terrifying. “Suddenly, people started pushing. I saw people fall, and others unable to get up,” said Rohit Kumar, who witnessed the stampede. Rescue efforts were hampered by the density of the crowd.
In the wake of the tragedy, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the suspension of Police Commissioner B. Dayanand, Additional Commissioner Vikash Kumar Vikash, and Deputy Commissioner Shekhar H. Tekkannavar. Additionally, senior officials from RCB, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and DNA Entertainment Networks have been taken into custody as investigations into criminal negligence continue.
Siddaramaiah expressed grief and determination to hold those responsible accountable. “We must ensure justice for the victims and their families and take steps to prevent such incidents in the future,” he stated.
The state government has established a judicial commission led by retired judge Michael Cunha to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the stampede. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is also actively probing the case.
Safety analysts have pointed out fundamental flaws in the event’s planning, including the lack of adequate barricades, insufficient crowd dispersal mechanisms, and poor coordination among civic agencies and police. Experts stress that the absence of emergency exit routes and medical preparedness contributed to the scale of the tragedy.
Political parties have reacted sharply to the incident. The opposition BJP accused the ruling Congress government of failing to ensure public safety and demanded a comprehensive overhaul of event management protocols.
The government announced compensation of ₹10 lakh for families of those who died and promised full medical care for those injured. Hospitals in Bengaluru continue to treat survivors, some in critical condition.
The tragedy has stirred public debate over the safety of mass gatherings in India’s growing metropolitan cities. Activists and experts are calling for stricter laws and improved enforcement to ensure such disasters do not recur.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise expressed profound sorrow, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragedy. We are committed to supporting the victims’ families and cooperating with the authorities.”
