The haunting landscape of Cherrapunji’s waterfalls now carries a tragic tale—of a honeymoon turned into a deadly conspiracy. Police have confirmed that 29-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi, who was found dead during his honeymoon in Meghalaya, was murdered in a shocking plot allegedly orchestrated by his wife and her lover, who operated under a fake identity: “Sanjay Verma.”

Raja and Sonam arrived in Nongriat on May 22, planning to explore the area’s natural beauty. On May 24, Raja vanished. After days of search, his body was found at the bottom of a gorge—battered and decomposing.
As investigators dug deeper, suspicion quickly fell on Sonam. Her story had holes. Her behavior was evasive. But it was her phone records that opened the floodgates.
She had been in constant contact with someone named “Sanjay Verma.” But Sanjay, it turned out, was a fabrication. The man behind the alias was Raj Kushwaha, a 24-year-old from Indore who had been in a relationship with Sonam before and after her marriage.
A Killer Trek
Using Raj’s coordination, three men were recruited to accompany Sonam and Raja on a hike to Wei-Sawdong Falls. On May 23, Raja was struck on the head and thrown into the gorge. The dao used in the attack was later recovered, and Sonam’s shirt was found nearby—sealed by Raja’s blood.
Locals recall seeing the group together. Sonam never reported her husband missing. Instead, she vanished, leaving behind her wedding ring and mangalsutra to stage her own disappearance.
From Lovers to Criminals
Police traced Sonam to Uttar Pradesh, where she was arrested on June 9. A video she posted before surrendering claimed innocence, but officials state she confessed under questioning.
Raj, along with the three hired killers, was arrested in Indore. They allegedly confessed to plotting the murder, motivated by jealousy, lust, and the desire to eliminate Raja as an obstacle.
Family and National Outcry
The murder has drawn intense public reaction. Raja’s family called for the harshest punishment. “He was a kind soul. He didn’t deserve this,” his sister said.
The case has prompted broader debates around trust, infidelity, and emotional abuse in modern marriages. Experts warn this case isn’t just about one murder—it’s a reflection of the dangerous consequences of unresolved relationships and hidden agendas.
Next Steps
The suspects remain in custody. The charge sheet, based on forensic evidence, phone data, witness accounts, and multiple confessions, is nearly complete. The trial will be closely watched.
As India processes the horror of this betrayal, one chilling fact remains: a man set out on a honeymoon with his wife, dreaming of love and togetherness—only to be led to his death by the one person he trusted the most.
