The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached a critical point as the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced it has exhausted its food supplies in the territory. This development comes after more than seven weeks of an Israeli-imposed blockade that has severely restricted the entry of humanitarian aid into the region. The blockade, which began on March 2, 2025, has led to widespread shortages of essential goods, including food, fuel, and medical supplies.

However, with the closure of all 25 WFP-supported bakeries since March 31 due to a lack of wheat flour and fuel, and the exhaustion of remaining food supplies, the agency’s ability to continue its operations has been severely compromised.
The humanitarian crisis has been further exacerbated by the ongoing conflict. Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 78 Palestinians within a 24-hour period, particularly in the Shejaia and Rafah areas. These attacks have led to increased displacement and further strained the already overwhelmed humanitarian infrastructure.
In response to the dire situation, the WFP has called for immediate and sustained humanitarian access to Gaza. The agency has pre-positioned over 116,000 metric tons of food aid at border crossings, which could feed 1 million people for four months, pending Israeli approval for entry. However, these supplies remain stranded due to the ongoing blockade.
The international community has expressed growing concern over the deteriorating conditions in Gaza. United Nations officials have warned that the blockade is pushing the population towards famine, with over 1 million children facing daily hunger. Food prices have surged by 1,400%, making basic necessities unaffordable for many families.
As the situation continues to worsen, humanitarian organizations are calling for an immediate end to the blockade and for all parties to allow unimpeded access for aid deliveries. Without urgent intervention, Gaza faces the prospect of a full-scale humanitarian disaster
