A BMW crashed through a barrier and fell from a bridge on Mumbai’s Coastal Road early Sunday, killing three people and critically injuring another.

CCTV footage captured the incident and showed the BMW moving at high speed before it struck the edge barrier. The vehicle then broke through the barrier and plunged from the elevated road into an under-construction parking site below.
The crash caused extensive damage to the car. Four occupants were inside at the time. Emergency responders took all of them to Nair Hospital, where three were declared dead.
Police identified two of the victims as 21-year-old Shanay Gajjal and 17-year-old Dhairya Seth. The third deceased person was believed to be approximately 25 years old, although his identity was not immediately confirmed.
Another passenger, reportedly around 20 years old, sustained critical injuries and remained under treatment.
Police have started an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the crash. The CCTV footage is expected to form an important part of the investigation because it shows the BMW immediately before it left the roadway.
The exact speed of the vehicle and the precise reason for the loss of control will have to be established by investigators. Officials will also examine the vehicle and the accident site.
The Coastal Road has become a major part of Mumbai’s transportation infrastructure. It provides a relatively direct route along the western side of the city and is designed to reduce congestion and travel time.
The road has different speed restrictions depending on the section. The main carriageway has a maximum speed limit of 80 kmph, while lower limits apply in tunnels and on ramps, curves and interchanges.
The road is also access-controlled, meaning vehicles are required to enter and exit through designated points. Rules prohibit activities such as stopping on the main carriageway, reversing and unauthorised U-turns.
The fatal accident occurred on an elevated portion of the route. Once the BMW crossed the roadside barrier, the height of the bridge resulted in a severe fall into the construction area below.
Investigators will now have to reconstruct the accident step by step. CCTV footage can help determine the vehicle’s position and movement, while the damaged barrier and BMW can provide additional physical evidence.
Authorities have not announced a final explanation for the accident. Initial reports indicate that speeding and loss of control are being examined, but the investigation will determine the precise cause.
The accident has drawn attention to the need for careful driving on Mumbai’s newer high-speed corridors. Modern road infrastructure can improve mobility, but drivers still need to comply with speed limits and remain attentive to changes in road alignment.
