Keane slams Rangnick for not giving Utd kids a chance as boss brings on Mata

MANCHESTER UNITED interim boss Ralf Rangnick has been slammed by Roy Keane for bringing Juan Mata on against Chelsea in Thursday’s 1-1 draw.

The Red Devils were held at home by Chelsea at Old Trafford to all-but end their faint hopes of finishing in the top four.

Marcos Alonso’s fine volley in the 60th minute was cancelled out by Cristiano Ronaldo‘s clinical strike moments later.

And with United needing a victory to keep the pressure on Arsenal and Tottenham, Rangnick decided to chuck on Mata in the 78th minute.

The 34-year-old, who has featured in four out of the last five Premier League games, is set to depart in the summer when his contract expires.

His introduction to the match baffled Keane, who questioned why three attacking youngsters in Alejandro Garnacho, Shola Shoretire and Hannibal Mejbri weren’t brought on instead.

Garnacho eventually made his top-flight debut in the 91st minute, but had too little time to make an impact.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane, who has declared United would have been in a better position if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wasn’t sacked, said: “Mata has come on for Man Utd again tonight.

“He’s come on the last few games.. you’ve got some young kids on the bench, get them on.

“It’s like a tribute to Mata, I thought it was his testimonial tonight. You’re Man United, you’re fighting for points, you’re playing for pride.

“It’s all like ‘we’ll give him a game, we’ll bring [Phil] Jones on, everyone gets a round of applause,’ you’re there to try and win a game of football for Man United.

“Forget all this ‘oh we’ll give someone 20 minutes because he’s leaving in a few weeks’ actually you should have left two years ago, a few of them.

“They’re all coming on getting their little 20 minutes.

“Like Mata comes on, I know Gary [Neville] was praising him when he comes on and had a few touches, but get some of the young lads on.”

Asked whether bringing kids on would have been better: “Yeah of course.

“Young lads who are hopefully going to be there for the future and get a taste of playing at Old Trafford, playing against really good players in terms of Chelsea.

“Mata’s leaving in a couple of weeks, you brought him on last week – Mata’s not going to come on and change the game.

“He should have left last year but last year they gave him another year. I don’t know why again, that job is for the boys.

“He’s pals with this or the chief executive, who’s giving out these contracts? [It’s] crazy.”

Keane also hit out at Nemanja Matic, another player set to leave as a free agent, over his post-match interview.
